Richard takes the time to educate customers on the nuances between his hot coffee and cold brew, offering samples that highlight the distinct flavors. And if you’re a fan of pastries, choose from their selection of cookies that are baked fresh daily. Indulge in flavors ranging from classic chocolate chip to seasonal favorites that evoke a sense of nostalgia with every bite.

The muffins are another highlight, boasting moist and fluffy textures that are perfect for any time of day—think Blueberry or rich Banana Nut, each crafted meticulously to burst with flavor.

Want something a bit heartier? The Southwest omelet wrap is a favorite among regulars and pairs wonderfully with their iced tea (both sweet and unsweet, available at $1.79). According to Desiree Porter, who frequents the café, she was delighted by the welcoming staff who shared their coffee expertise, making every visit feel special.

Customer Megan MacDonald describes Island Cafe as “an absolute treasure,” comparing the food quality to Michelin-level while still retaining the genuine warmth of a hometown café. My wife and I enjoyed a delightful breakfast and coffee. They make their own bagels and they are really good. Ours were fresh out of the oven ... warm with a nice crunch to the crust. We got a tasty lesson on the differences between hot coffee and cold brewed from Richard the chef/owner. He and his wife Lucinda are warm and welcoming hosts. Ther cafe is easy to find amongst all the businesses near Oak Grove Park. The folks who work around there have been writing rave reviews and the meal and hospitality lived up to those reviews. We'll be going back.

Usually, I order delivery from here (my office is right upstairs), but today, I went down to pick up my order. I'm glad I did! The staff was so welcoming and took the time to talk to me about cold brew coffee and hot coffee (even letting me sample the difference). I got a Southwest omelet wrap and a cold brew. They have never disappointed and live up to the same great flavor they've always had. I've been coming here for two years, so I know the old owners, who have since retired. The new owners are still doing wonderful things down there for breakfast and lunch. If you're looking for a little café to support, this is the one!

Island Cafe is an absolute treasure tucked inside an unassuming office building in the heart of Chesapeake, Virginia. Don’t let the location fool you—this place is pure magic. The food here rivals Michelin-level quality, but it’s served with hometown warmth, pride, and soul. The daily specials are always inventive and deeply satisfying, the coffee is rich and robust, and the attention to detail in every dish is remarkable. What makes Island Cafe truly stand out, though, is the heart behind it. The head chef is not only a culinary talent, but also a veteran, engineer, father, and friend—someone who clearly pours love and intention into every plate. The quality is top-tier, and the value is unbelievable. This isn’t just a meal—it’s an experience. A must-visit for locals and a worthy detour for anyone passing through. Chesapeake is lucky to have this place.

I went to this hidden gem on my lunch break today and I was not disappointed. The service was amazing. The staff were friendly, the cafe was nice and clean, and the food was hot and fresh. I took advantage of their Thursday special; a chicken Philly sandwich. Now that I’m nice and full, it’s time to get back to work. When you have a chance, go check them out. You won’t be sorry
